There’s loads happening at Wexford’s ZorroFest this May bank holiday weekend.

 Fri, May 3

19:30 First Friday Poetry @ Café Fusion, North Main St, Wexford. Readers, writers and listeners are invited are to an evening of poetry about Wexford, its history and its people. And, of course, for the weekend that’s in it, expect to hear of the exploits of one William Lamport and of the legendary figure he inspired, el Zorro. Tel 086 2434360.

22:00 Cousin Bill, Maggie Mays, Monck St, Wexford. Long awaited launch of debut album “F1RST” from one of one of Wexford’s best loved bands.  For the weekend that’s in it we temporarily re-christen the band “mi primo Guillermo”!

14:30 Concert: “Viva la Vida” with Camilla Griehsel & Maurice Roycroft (aka Maurice Seezer), Greenacres Gallery. Expect “Hot Huapangos and Raunchy Rancheros”! (Invitation-only event).

15:30 The William Lamport Saga: A Double-sided Tapestry, White’s Hotel. Display of a tapestry made by students of Scoil Mhuire N.S., Schull, Co Cork in which they “unravel the threads of Mexican/Irish historical connections”. Educational supervisor Maria Kennedy; Artistic Supervisor Maria Pizzuti.

16:00 Photography Exhibition: Photographs of Mexican Life & Culture by Padraig Grant, Rowe Street, Wexford.

16:30 Book Presentation: “Don Guillén de Lampart, Son of his Own Exploits” by Dra. Andrea Martínez Baracs with a presentation and reading by the author, Wexford Arts Centre. In this book she takes a warts and all look at Lampart, “the theologian, mathematician, astrologist, rebel, pirate, soldier of the Spanish Empire and a spy for the Crown of the New Spain (Mexico today)”. The book includes original writings by Lampart, never before published.

Selected restaurants in town will be offering authentic Mexican dishes in their menu on the day. Participating restaurants include Greenacres, La Dolce Vita, The Yard, D’Lush Cafe, Cístin Eile. Mexican fare will also be offered at Library Bar & Central Station, both in White’s Hotel. Bars such as Maggie May’s and The Sky & The Ground will also be serving up mojitas, margaritas and, for los hombres duros, a lick of salt, bite of lime and shot of Tequila!

All weekend The Bullring Market in the middle of Wexford will be tipping the hat to all things Zorro. Expect this to take in all manner of Iberian and Mexican elements.
